The Science Of The Stay
The Paws & Stay Retreat 30/90 Rotation™
At Paws & Stay Retreat, we provide more than just a space for your dog; we provide a welfare aligned environment. Our signature 30/90 Rotation™ has been developed in alignment with established canine ethology and behavioural science.
The "Wired Not Tired" Effect
The Fact: Many experts/associations advocate that the canine nervous system requires at least 90 minutes (some dogs take considerably longer) of low-stimulation rest to return to a resting baseline after a high arousal event. What is Trigger Stacking? How to Handle an Overly Stressed Dog

Our Approach: A canine guest coming to the Paws & Stay Retreat will receive a 30 minute bespoke 1-1 enrichment plan followed by a transition to a peaceful rest & recovery 90-minute decompression. This rotation will proactively assist in reducing raised cortisol levels by providing a total sensory retreat for them to relax in.
The Science: High-stimulation environments can trigger the HPA axis, flooding a dog’s system with cortisol. Without structured recovery, these hormones "stack," leading to a state of over-stimulation. Behavioral, Physiological, and Pathological Approaches of Cortisol in Dogs | MDPI
Sniff Power
The Fact: The "Let me Sniff" Study: Research by Duranton & Horowitz (2019) Let me sniff! Nosework induces positive judgment bias in pet dogs - ScienceDirect showed that dogs allowed to sniff (mental enrichment) had significantly lower heart rates and were more relaxed than dogs on a standard physical walk.

Our Approach: We use tailored Enrichment Plans to ensure your dog is "expertly fulfilled" …… tired in the brain yet calm in the body
The Science: The canine olfactory bulb is 40 times larger, relative to brain size, than a human one. Engaging a dog’s nose consumes significantly more glucose and cognitive energy than physical walking.
Working With The Internal Clock
The Fact: Interrupting these cycles can lead to irritability, increased stress and cognitive fatigue. REM versus Non-REM sleep disturbance specifically affects inter-specific emotion processing in family dogs (Canis familiaris) | Scientific Reports

Our Approach: Our 30/90 Rotation™ mirrors your dog’s natural internal rhythm, preventing the "overtired" meltdown and ensuring they remain physiologically relaxed and is also why we operate a strict Human-Free zone for the duration of each stay.
The Science: Dogs are polyphasic sleepers with natural "Ultradian Rhythms" (biological cycles)
